It was a fabulous day yesterday at Rossett Sports Centre for the Rossett Harrogate & Craven Junior Girls Football Cup Tournament. The sun was blazing as we hosted 18x U10 Girls teams from as far afield as Bedale, Eldwick, Ilkley and Clifford. They competed for the Cup, Plate and Shield.
Four groups played in the initial stages, and our girls were pitted against Bramhope, Ilkley, Skipton and Weetwood - strong teams who all made it through, along with us, to at least the Semis of the Cup and Plate, with Skipton winning the Shield Final.
Finishing third in our group with a win against Weetwood, a draw with Skipton and losses to Bramhope and Ilkley (sweet revenge for us beating them in the League Cup Quarter Final last weekend), saw us face Wetherby in the Semi of the Plate.
It was a tough game which finished 0-0. For the second week running, it went down to penalties. This week, however, it was not to be, and despite fine saves from Esme, Wetherby triumphed 3-2. So close!
It was our left winger Holly’s birthday and, to lift our spirits and sugar levels, Holly dished out birthday cakes to the whole team, who joined the parents in a rousing round of “Happy Birthday to Holly”. In fact, as a present to the rest of the team, Holly made a ridiculously catchy song that namechecks the team called “Beckwithshaw Girls” (with a little help from Suno), which the girls can’t stop singing - you can listen to it by clicking here. Holly’s coming for your crown, Taylor!
Scott, U10 Girls Manager summed it up "Good fun tournament today. When it came to the business end, 0-0 against Wetherby in the Semi-Final is a result to be proud of (we lost 6-0 to them at the start of the season)! All the girls' pens were on target, which I was hugely impressed with. Happy birthday, Holly. No silverware today, but some yummy cake in any case!"
Coach Martin said, "We took a full squad to our Harrogate & Craven League Tournament with the intention of ensuring our girls got an even amount of game time in the group stages. We did adjust our formation slightly to provide additional support defensively against some strong teams. The girls adapted well to our instructions."
The winner of the Cup was also decided on penalties, with Clifford pipping Scotton to the silverware by 7 penalties to 6. Wetherby, who beat our girls, took the plate with a 3-1 win over Bedale, whilst Weetwood won with a convincing 4-1 scoreline over Pannal Sports.
Bizarre Tourny Mishap
In the Semi Final against Wetherby, our right winger, Martha B, was accidentally flattened by the referee - fortunately, she was only left with a sore hip and shoulder plus bruises. She's a total trouper and will no doubt be fighting fit for the next game. Brave Martha B!
It was a superb afternoon with a huge turnout of parents and a really high standard of girls' football on show.
